110 policemen in jail for sex crimes – says official

The Director-General of National Police Service said at least 110 police personnel including officers are behind bars for crimes related to Sexual and Gender-Based violence across the country.

Major General Majak Kuol Mading said the police personnel were convicted between 2020-2022.

General Kuol made the remark in an ongoing workshop on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights in Juba in Juba on Monday.

He was responding to concerns that police personals are not held accountable for committing sexual offenses.

“We are attending this important workshop about young people’s health. During the workshop session many says police are committing crimes and they are not on trial I can assure you that no one above the law,” he said.

The police official told the participants that the Ministry of Interior established Sexual Gender Based Violence offices in most police stations around the country.

“The police authority arrested and tried 110 police personal including officers for crime related to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence for the year 2020 up to year 2022.”

“We are working hand in hand with public, and now we have sexual gender based violence officer in all police stations around the country to investigate any case related to SGBV and I am calling on the public to report any SGBV.”

The two-day workshop organized by Plan International brought together concerned stakeholders including the Ministries of Health and Interior as well as Gender Child and Social.

Plan International has been operating in South Sudan since 2006.

At present, the organization works in Central and Eastern Equatoria, Lakes State and Greater Pibor Administrative Area.
